He started his cricketing career at the age of eighteen in the Sussex Second XI Championship, Having played one first-class game for Sussex
in 2001, after a lack of first team opportunities he decided his future lay elsewhere . He signed for Derbyshire CCC in 2003 and made his First Class debut against the South African touring side in August 2003. A promising first class debut saw him claim 4 wickets in the first innings . Paul appeared in 3 Frizzel County Championship games that season.
Paul appeared in 16 first class matches, taking 41 wickets at an average of 41.78 with a County Championship best fiqures of 4-75 against Durham at the Riverside in 2004.
