2007 Population Census Results

The last national census was held in 2007 and the next census is scheduled for 2010. For years between the censuses, the NSO issues estimates made using surveys and statistical systems. As of August 2007 the number of Filipinos had risen to about 88,570,000 persons, 15.8 percent higher than the 76,500,000 in May 2000, government said. “The result of the 2007 Census of Population shows an annual growth rate of 2.04 percent from 2000 to 2007,” Augusto Santos, acting director general of the National Economic and Development Authority, told reporters.
The National Statistics Office conducted the census from August to September 2007, with August 1 as the reference period.

Santos said the Philippines’ population expanded from 1960 to 1970 at an annual rate of 3.01 percent. This slowed to 2.75 percent for the decade from 1970 to 1980, and further to 2.34 percent from 1990 to 2000.

The Philippine population growth rate was similar to Malaysia with an average 2.1-percent growth rate from 2001 to 2006; but higher than Vietnam, 1.4 percent from 2001 to 2006; Indonesia, 1.3 percent; and Thailand, 0.8 percent.

Final results of the latest Census of Population (POPCEN 2007) conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO) placed the Philippine population at 88,574,614 persons as of August 1, 2007. Said results down to barangay level were made official with the signing by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo

Among provinces, Cavite had the largest population with 2,860,000 people. Bulacan was second with 2,830,000, and Pangasinan came in third, with 2,650,000.

Five other provinces surpassed the 2,000,000 mark: Laguna (2,470,000 persons); Cebu, excluding its three highly urbanized cities - Cebu City, Lapu-lapu City, and Mandaue City (2,440,000 persons); Negros Occidental, excluding Bacolod City (2.37 million persons); Rizal (2,280,000 persons); and Batangas (2,250,000 persons)

Three of such HUCs were in the NCR: Quezon City (2,680,000), Manila (1,660,000), and Caloocan City (1,380,000). The other HUC which qualified for the Millionaires Club was Davao City with a population of about 1,360,000.

About 40,000 fieldworkers were deployed by the NSO during the nationwide census taking last year. The population counts proclaimed by the President as official for all purposes were based on census questionnaires from the different barangays all over the country. These questionnaires were processed in Regional Data Processing Centers adopting a new technology which involved digital imaging and intelligent character recognition. The Census was conducted pursuant to Batas Pambansa Blg. 72 and Commonwealth Act 591.

Final counts by barangay are available at the NSO website. Regional volumes in print and electronic copies (CD-ROM) can be obtained at the Databank and Information Services Division of the NSO.
