Prospect Park was formed as a borough by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature
on March 13, 1901, from portions of the now-defunct Manchester Township.

living together, 20.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.4% were non-families. 17.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.17 and the average family size was 3.56.
In the borough the population was spread out with 29.6% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 32.8% from 25 to 44, 18.5% from 45 to 64, and 8.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 90.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.7 males.

The Mayor
of Prospect Park is Mohamed T. Khairullah, whose term of office ends on December 31, 2010. Khairullah became mayor in 2005 after former mayor Will Kubofcik resigned to move to Bloomingdale. Khairullah won election to a full term in November 2006 and is currently running for re-election.
Members of the Prospect Park Borough Council are Council President Richard Esquiche (2008), Hassan Fahmy (2009), Amer Haobsh (2008), Christina Peralta (2010), Esther "Tita" Perez (2009) and Adnan Zakaria (2010). All of Prospect Park's council seats are held by members of the Democratic Party
