, who took it to #3 in the U.S. on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 in April 1972 on both the Canadian RPM
singles chart for three weeks and the UK singles chart for five weeks the following July. The song has also been covered by British pop group S Club Juniors
.
On March 15, 1972, D.J. Robert W. Morgan
played the Donny Osmond version for 90 minutes straight on KHJ in Los Angeles. LAPD
mistakenly raided the station studios after receiving numerous calls from listeners. Confused, the officers left without making any arrests.
The song can also be heard in the 2005 Family/Comedy film, Son of the Mask
. Long after being ignored and then yelled at by his own master Tim Avery,(as shown in a deleted scene of the film),Jack Russell Terrier dog Otis puts on the mask he found in a river (made by Loki the god of Mischief) and play the song "Puppy Love" for his girlfriend named Venus.
