The villages of origin of the Purewal clan are Shankar where they can be traced to three Purewal brothers during the Guru Gobind era (circa 1700AD), Ajit Singh Garhi, Hakim Pur and Kalahwalfatu in the Doaba region of Punjab.

The three Purewal brothers were very religious men. It is reported that they helped people in need, and donated money yearly to the gurdwara. The brothers were also athletes. They promoted wrestling in Shankar, with wrestling matches taking place yearly, to this day.

Hakimpur is a village in tehsil Banga, twenty-two kilometres from the city of Phagwara within the Doaba region of Punjab in India. This village is in the Nawanshahr District, close to the boundary of Jalandhar district. The closest towns are Mukandpur and Apra. Purewal and Sihra families are amongst the traditional residents of this village.Some Purewal families were also traced to Sialkot now in Pakistan.

Purewal is a gotra or clan of Jats found mainly in the state of Punjab in India.
