On June 26, 2008, Calgary placed him on waivers for the purpose of freeing up space for the salary cap. However, he was not claimed due to his injury history, age, and expensive salary. Warrener did not play in the 2008–09 NHL season
due to a shoulder injury. He was placed on the Long Term Injury Reserve for the duration of the hockey season, effectively giving the Flames the cap space they would have gotten if he was claimed off waivers. He retired after being unable to find another NHL contract, remaining with the Flames as a scout.
