Rowan joined Symantec in 1991, and has held positions in R&D, operations, support and engineering, along with various management roles throughout both the consumer and enterprise organizations within Symantec. In his current role, Rowan manages Symantec's Small and Medium business segment globally, as well as Symantec's Software as a Service business, which includes what was previously MessageLabs Inc. Prior to Rowan’s current position, he served as Senior Vice President of the Consumer Business Unit at Symantec
where he led the Norton business from 2006-2010. Prior to that Rowan led the business for key enterprise & consumer security solutions.
Rowan was involved in the earliest days of the computer security industry, getting a summer job at 16, hunting the first computer viruses. Later, he was hired by Peter Norton Computing Inc. in Santa Monica, CA to work on the Norton products. In Rowan's 20 years working with Symantec's Norton business, he has helped grow it from a small software utilities company, to the global market leader in consumer security, and over $2billion dollars in annual revenue.
Rowan holds a variety of patents in computer security and operating systems maintenance, and is regularly cited as an expert on computer security and consumer technology. Rowan completed the Executive Institute at the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University, and the Stanford Directors College at Stanford Law School.
In the early 1990s Rowan co-founded Software Shelf Inc, a Silicon Valley company, where he now serves on the board of directors. Rowan also serves on the Advisory board for Mitsui Venture Partners and is an active member of the IEEE. Rowan has completed the Executive Institute at the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University, and the Stanford Directors College at Stanford Law School.
