Interior design was by EDGE Interior Design Pty. Ltd., an Australian design consultant , together with SM City Marikina’s design team including Jose Siao Ling and Associates (architects), D.A. Abcede and Associates (project managers), and BF Construction Corporation, the general contractors of the mall. SM City Marikina is a part of SM's 50th Anniversary and it was the first SM mall to open on 2008.
It is the 31st SM Supermall built in the Philippines, 14th latest SM Mall built within Metro Manila, and 3rd among other SM malls opened in the eastern region of Metropolitan Manila, after SM Megamall
in Mandaluyong City and SM Supercenter Pasig in Pasig City (excluding nearby SM City Taytay
which is part of Rizal Province). and not Metro Manila .
SM City Marikina is strategically located in the Marikina River
area which is currently being rehabilitated and developed, and the Marikina Riverbanks Center. It is situated along Marcos Highway (Radial Road-6 or R6), Barangay Calumpang, Marikina City. This mall has a total of 60,000 square meter land area and a total of 124,877.85 square meter gross floor area. Currently, SM City Marikina is one of the largest malls in Metro Manila and the 2nd largest mall in the eastern region of Metro Manila in terms of land area and also its floor areas thereby aligning it with the GFA of nearby malls Sta. Lucia East Grandmall

which was supposed to become a carnival/amusement park called Fun Pamilya. Construction began on early 2006. SM Prime Holdings and BF Construction Corporation are the developers of the mall.
BF Corporation's role is to build some of the ground-breaking constructions, they constructed the building and applied 73-strong vertical tubes which will enable the mall to support the upper levels (Basement 1 to 3rd floor) from its ground area (Basement 2). Also, they are responsible for the construction of new bridges (branching towards Marcos Highway) surrounding the establishment. The mall's main entrance is located at the 3rd level of the building (1st floor of the mall) to be at par with Marcos Highway's high elevation, SM Marikina is also considered as the only SM mall in the Philippines to have the main entrance located on the 3rd level of the establishment.
SM Prime Holdings and BF Construction Corporation have a master plan to build an annex building, located at the back of the mall which will extend from its main building. The construction will begin early 2012. It is envisioned to become one of the largest malls in Metro Manila in terms of land and floor area when completed.
