Info

He is the son of an Iraqi international defender Shakir Ali who played for the Iraqi national football team and Al-Talaba club in the 70's and the 80's of the previous century.
Equally effective in defence and in a more creative midfield role, Salam Saker is one of Iraq's brightest young stars. Born in July 1986, he first hit the headlines when he was signed by Iraqi Super League giants Al Talaba in 2005 at the age of 18. Following a subsequent two-year spell with his second club Arbil FC, the emerging talent earned a move abroad to his current club, Qatari side Al Khor.
Shaker boasts a similarly proud record at international level. After representing the former Iraqi Olympic side that won silver at the 2006 Asian Games at Doha, he was called into the national B team for the 2007 King's Cup in Thailand. His debut with the senior side came in January 2008 when he played a defensive role in Iraq's 1-1 friendly draw with Jordan.

Two appearances in the Iraqis' ill-fated qualifying campaign for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa added to his experience, with Shaker playing the entirety of the 1-1 draw against China before starting again in the 1-0 loss to Qatar. With natural talent that is the envy of many of his Asian peers, the 22-year-old is expected to play a crucial role as Iraq attempt to raise their game at the forthcoming FIFA Confederations Cup South Africa 2009.
