Salem station consists of one platform which serves a single track. A staircase provides access to the platform from Route 107. Immediately south of Salem, the train tracks enter the Salem Tunnel, which carries trains underneath Washington Street in Salem. Salem has a park and ride
lot with 340 spaces at $4.00 each as well as 7 bicycle spaces. Tickets for Salem may be purchased at Red Lion Smoke Shop at 94 Washington Street; unlike other MBTA stations with nearby ticket sales locations, there is no surcharge for tickets purchased on the train at Salem.
extended the Salem tunnel to the south, and built the station in the southern approach span. However, the station lacked elevators to reach the below-ground platforms, and large capacity parking. By the late 1980's, the MBTA abandoned the station, and moved to the north end of the tunnel, where the current station is today.
