Sapoviruses are caliciviruses that together with the noroviruses, are the most common cause of acute viral gastroenteritis in adults. The type species
is Sapporo virus
and it is named after Sapporo, Japan where the virus was first discovered following an outbreak of gastroenteritis in an orphanage. Unlike norovirus, this virus generally only causes mild gastroenteritis in young children. A different type of virus called rotavirus
