Richardson was born and grew up in Toronto

 on October 21, 1971. Her mother, Susan Cuddy, was director of design and development for the old City of Toronto. Her father, Douglas Richardson, is a retired professor of history of art and architecture at the University of Toronto. Her brother, Theo Richardson, is also a designer with Rich, Brilliant, Willing, based out of New York City. Richardson's parents divorced when she was 5.

Richardson attended Havergal College for high school. In 1993, she received a B.A. in Visual Arts (a combination of Art History and Studio Arts) from The University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario

Richardson is married to Alexander Younger, the owner of advertising and marketing agency, Design Lab. They met as children - Younger was a friend of Richardson's brother - but did not begin dating until 1998. The couple live in Toronto with their two daughters Robin (born 2006) and Fiona (born 2008). They also own a summer house on Georgian Bay

Career

In 1995, Richardson was hired as a behind-the-scenes prop stylist and set decorator for CTV

For the next several years, she worked as an interior designer, worked as the Set Designer and Stylist for Savoir Faire on HGTV, renovated a series of houses, and appeared on several home and design based TV shows as a guest expert. Sarah has five television shows: Room Service, Design Inc., Sarah's House, Sarah's Cottage, and Sarah 101.

Richardson has several signature product lines including indoor and outdoor furnishings. In April 2010, she released a line of paints with Para Paints, called Sarah Richardson's Designer Palette, which sells at hardware chain Lowe's

Publications

Sarah's work is featured frequently in design publications in Canada, the US and the United Kingdom. She was the youngest designer to be named one of Canada's foremost "stylemakers" by Canadian House and Home magazine, and was awarded Canada's Top 40 Under 40TM in 2007. She makes regular cross-Canada appearances and writes a featured column on design for The Globe and Mail.
