Sarcoplasm
Encyclopedia
The Sarcoplasm of a muscle fiber is comparable to the cytoplasm
of other cells, but it houses unusually large amounts of glycosomes (granules of stored glycogen
) and significant amounts of myoglobin
, an oxygen
binding protein. The calcium concentration in sarcoplasma is also a special element of the muscular fiber by means of which the contractions takes place and regulates.
Other than the fact that it contains mostly myofibrils, its contents are otherwise comparable to those of the cytoplasm of other cells. It has a Golgi apparatus
, near the nucleus
, mitochondria just on the inside of the cytoplasmic membrane or sarcolemma
, as well as a smooth endoplasmic reticulum organized in an extensive network.
Cytoplasm
The cytoplasm is a small gel-like substance residing between the cell membrane holding all the cell's internal sub-structures , except for the nucleus. All the contents of the cells of prokaryote organisms are contained within the cytoplasm...
of other cells, but it houses unusually large amounts of glycosomes (granules of stored glycogen
Glycogen
Glycogen is a molecule that serves as the secondary long-term energy storage in animal and fungal cells, with the primary energy stores being held in adipose tissue...
) and significant amounts of myoglobin
Myoglobin
Myoglobin is an iron- and oxygen-binding protein found in the muscle tissue of vertebrates in general and in almost all mammals. It is related to hemoglobin, which is the iron- and oxygen-binding protein in blood, specifically in the red blood cells. The only time myoglobin is found in the...
, an oxygen
Oxygen
Oxygen is the element with atomic number 8 and represented by the symbol O. Its name derives from the Greek roots ὀξύς and -γενής , because at the time of naming, it was mistakenly thought that all acids required oxygen in their composition...

Other than the fact that it contains mostly myofibrils, its contents are otherwise comparable to those of the cytoplasm of other cells. It has a Golgi apparatus
Golgi apparatus
The Golgi apparatus is an organelle found in most eukaryotic cells. It was identified in 1898 by the Italian physician Camillo Golgi, after whom the Golgi apparatus is named....
, near the nucleus
Cell nucleus
In cell biology, the nucleus is a membrane-enclosed organelle found in eukaryotic cells. It contains most of the cell's genetic material, organized as multiple long linear DNA molecules in complex with a large variety of proteins, such as histones, to form chromosomes. The genes within these...
, mitochondria just on the inside of the cytoplasmic membrane or sarcolemma
Sarcolemma
The sarcolemma is the cell membrane of a muscle cell . It consists of a true cell membrane, called the plasma membrane, and an outer coat made up of a thin layer of polysaccharide material that contains numerous thin collagen fibrils...
