The village was named after Jacob Schantzer, who was a business man from Ontario who helped the Mennonites migrate from Russia to southern Manitoba more than 100 years ago. Coincidentally, the early 21st century has also seen a steady influx of Russian and German born Mennonites settle in Schanzenfeld and surrounding areas.
