The municipality is located in the See-Gaster Wahlkreis on a terrace on the edge of the Linth
valley. It consists of the village of Schänis and the hamlets
of Maseltrangen, Dorf, Rufi and Rütiberg as well as seasonally occupied alpine herding villages
