A server farm or server cluster is a collection of computer servers usually maintained by an enterprise
to accomplish server needs far beyond the capability of one machine. Server farms often have backup servers, which can take over the function of primary servers in the event of a primary server failure. Server farms are typically co-located with the network switch

Siting is one of the factors that affect the energy consumption and environmental effects of a server farm. In areas where climate favors cooling and lots of renewable electricity is available the environmental effects will be more moderate. Thus countries with favorable conditions, such as Canada, Finland, Sweden and Switzerland, are trying to attract cloud computing data centers.
Heat from the servers can be used to help heat buildings in cold climates, thus reducing the energy consumption of conventional heaters.
