In December 2010, the Red Wings and the Town of Shelburne became the centre of attention due to a pair of articles written by the Toronto Star
's Robert Cribb. Cribb interview the players, townsfolk, and the player's parents off in Russia
to gain perspective on the team, the environment surrounding the team, the reaction of the town to the team, the reaction of Hockey Canada
officials to the team, and also how the parents of the players back home in Russia felt were the majority of the first article. The bulk of the players are from Russia and came here in hopes of living the "Canadian Dream", and some really cannot financially afford it. Local players on the team have found themselves alienated by some members of the community. The community seems to be divided between supporting and being against the team. Hockey Canada is against the existence of the team and the league they play in because of its use of foreigners and its American-style user fees. The parents of the players just seem to want their kids to be happy, wherever they are. Readers of the Toronto Star, some local, same as far away as Chicago
have pledged money to payoff hockey-related debts for these players to continue their time with the Red Wings. The Detroit Red Wings
Alumni Association has contact the team to ask how they may help these players. The Mayor of Shelburne, Ed Crewson, has also asked Hockey Canada to come forward at a town meeting to discuss their policies, which he has labelled, "...severe and draconian".
In the Fall of 2011, the team decided to drop its exclusivity of Russian players.
