Simon Base was an English

er. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-fast bowler who played first-class cricket between 1981 and 1999.

, Kent, but first represented Western Province South Africa in 1981 before moving back to England to commence his county career. He initially played for Glamorgan
in 1986 against Gloucestershire
. A fixture for his debut first-class English season, in the second half of 1987 he moved to South Africa to play for Boland
, where his most crucial act with the team was to help win the 1997/98 Castle Bowl against Transvaal's B team.
In 1988 he was back in England, playing for Derbyshire
, with whom he stayed until 1993. During this time, he again returned to South Africa, to play for Border
, and, in 1989, toured the Netherlands
with the England A team. He participated in the 1990/91 Castle Bowl final, where Border and Western Province B drew the match and shared that year's trophy. While playing for the Peakites, he batted at number ten in the lineup thanks to the presence of "The Great Dane", tailend fixture Ole Mortensen
.
After a relatively successful 1991 season which saw Derbyshire finish in third place in the County Championship table, he moved to Border
, who finished second-bottom of the 1991/92 Casale Cup table prior to his return, having played five of the six games in the competition.
He reappeared and alternated between Derbyshire and Border until 1994, when Derbyshire underperformed in the County Championship, finishing second-bottom to Glamorgan
. Over the next two years, he was only to play two games in the Championship, settling instead for a semi-regular place in Derbyshire's Second XI team. He made one appearance in 1999.
