The South African cricket
championship, the SuperSport Series
, was remodelled in 2004-05 with six franchise teams competing. Two extra domestic competitions were introduced that are called the South African Airways Provincial Three-Day Challenge (first-class; originally the UCB Provincial Cup) and the South African Airways Provincial One-Day Challenge (limited overs; originally the UCB Provincial Shield) in which the eleven provincial teams still compete individually, as well as several minor provincial teams and non-South African teams from Namibia, and previously from Zimbabwe.
The Provincial Three-Day Challenge is a first-class championship for the provincial teams and so is effectively the descendant of the old Currie Cup
