Southland as a representative team played interprovincial cricket as early as 1864, and later first played first-class cricket
in 1915 against Otago at Rugby Park, Invercargill
, with their first-class debut ending in a 118 run defeat with Southland being dismissed for scores of 71 and 62. The team would next appear in seven further first-class fixtures, with them appearing in first-class cricket for a final time in 1921 against the touring Australians at Rugby Park. Southland appeared eight times in first-class cricket, winning once, losing five and drawing two. Southland played all their home first-class matches at Rugby Park, Invercargill.
