Capiello was elected in May of 1973 defeating incumbent mayor DePascale and avoiding a runoff by 84 votes.

 on December 5, 2007 after hitting an unmarked car belonging to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office. Cappiello denied that the incident was a result of intoxication. He blamed the accident on the weather, but admitted to having been drinking.

On February 17, 2009 Cappiello announced his intention to run for mayor again. He never filed and later endorsed Peter Cammarano
