History

Industrial designer Nerio Alessandri wanted to create Technogym when he was 22 and decided to combine his design skills with his passion for sport, and began building exercise equipment in the garage of his home.
In 1985 Technogym launched its first complete strength training line, and in 1986 it presented Unica, the first, hi-tech design, home trainer.
Then, in 1990, the company added its first cardiovascular training line.
In 1992 Technogym defined its brand position with the tagline “The Wellness Company”. In 2000 it launched the Selection line, today the most popular strength training line in the world, and in 2002 it launched Excite, the first cardiovascular training line with an integrated TV screen. Again in 2000 Technogym was nominated official supplier for athletic training equipment at the Olympic Games in Sydney. Since then the company has been an official supplier for numerous other Olympic Games, including Athens 2004, Turin 2006, Beijing 2008 and London 2012 (nominated on July 13th 2010).
Today Technogym boasts approximately 55,000 installations worldwide in 35,000 wellness centres and 20,000 private homes and estimates suggest that approximately 20 million people use its products every day.
Technogym has 2000 employees in 13 branches in Europe, the United States, Asia, the Middle East, Australia and South America and 90% of its turnover is exported to over 100 different countries.

Concept and Mission

In 1992 Technogym defined its concept of Wellness as a lifestyle based on regular physical activity, balanced diet and a positive outlook, and the tagline “The Wellness Company” stating its brand position was added to the corporate logo. The concept of Wellness is founded on the ancient Roman maximum of “mens sana in corpore sano” (a healthy mind in a healthy body) and is a genuine alternative to the American concept of fitness. Fitness focuses on a small group of sports enthusiasts, whereas Wellness speaks to a much wider range of people who wish to improve their lifestyle.
At Technogym this strategic position means developing user-friendly, stylish equipment for various population targets (including beginners, the aged, sports enthusiasts and users with specific pathologies).
