in 1761. Prior to this, there is a reference to a player called Woods of Surrey, described as a "long stop

It is possible that he has been confused in Scores and Biographies with John Wood
, another Surrey player who was mainly active in the 1770s, given that the book always refers to John Wood as "Thomas Wood". But John Wood was born in 1744 and would only have been a teenager in 1759 and 1761.
