He first became known in 1999 when he joined Belgian gypsy guitarist, Fapy Lafertin

. Kliphuis toured Europe with Lafertin's Quintet and featured on three cds before deciding on a solo career in 2004.

Kliphuis has hosted workshops jazz violin at festivals and other venues, where he teaches the style of Stéphane Grappelli. He host an annual camp dedicated to this style: Grappelli Camp NL.

In the UK, he works closely with Roy Percy (Bass), Nigel Clark (Guitar) and David Newton
