Tim Kliphuis

Tim Kliphuis is a Dutch violinist.
He first became known in 1999 when he joined Belgian gypsy guitarist, Fapy Lafertin
. Kliphuis toured Europe with Lafertin's Quintet and featured on three cds before deciding on a solo career in 2004.
He was classically trained at the Amsterdam
Conservatoire and started playing gypsy jazz in the style of jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli
. Other influences include saxophonist Stan Getz
and guitarist Joe Pass
. Since 2006, Kliphuis started combining classical, folk and world music with gypsy jazz, leading to performances outside the jazz world.
An internationally touring musician, he has recorded with Angelo Debarre
and performed with Martin Taylor
, The Rosenberg Trio, Richard Galliano
but also celtic traditional musicians Frankie Gavin
and Charlie McKerron. His recent projects feature a mix of violin styles.
Kliphuis has hosted workshops jazz violin at festivals and other venues, where he teaches the style of Stéphane Grappelli. He host an annual camp dedicated to this style: Grappelli Camp NL.
In the UK, he works closely with Roy Percy (Bass), Nigel Clark (Guitar) and David Newton
(Piano). As a quartet, they performed a concert at Iford Manor
on 30 June 2011 which is to be released as a live DVD.
