After getting a job at Quinte Broadcasting in 1994, Smith quickly became a fixture for morning radio listeners in the Quinte region. Before his election victory on October 6th, 2011, Smith had spent more than sixteen years on the radio with Quinte Broadcasting's 800 CJBQ, Mix 97 and Rock 107stations eventually becoming the News Director

During his years as the News Director at Quinte Broadcasting, Smith was a hardworking community volunteer working with the Quinte Chapter of the ALS Society, serving as Chairman for Operation Red Nose Quinte and working with dozens of other charitable organizations. Todd has served on the Loyalist College Advisory Board since his graduation there in 1994 and he has encouraged local children to embrace a physical lifestyle by coaching rep hockey in the Belleville Bearcats organization.

Todd also has the distinction of being the first ever winner of the Dancing with the Stars Quinte contest. He currently resides in the Oak Hills area of Hastings County with his wife Tawnya, a local high school teacher, and daughters Payton and Reagan
