The convention centre opened in 1995 as the largest in Canada, with close to 500,000 square feet (46,000 m²) of exhibit space. However, it was surpassed by both the Metro Toronto Convention Centre

The Toronto Congress Centre has since expanded its exhibit space to over 1 million square feet (90,000 m²) with the addition of a second building (a vacant industrial building purchased in 2006), north of the current building (referred to as North Exhibition Hall). In early 2008, it regained its title as the largest convention centre in Canada.
The site is chosen for events due to closeness to nearby hotels and Toronto Pearson International Airport
