Encyclopedia
The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) is the largest national trade union center
in the Philippines
. It was formed in 1975 with official backing of the Marcos
government.
TUCP has previously claimed a membership of 1 million members, but ICTUR casts some question on the veracity of the number. In 2009, a large organization of migrant workers, the OFW Family Club, affiliated with TUCP.
Membership in TUCP declined in the 1990s, and the union is involved in the more turbulent labour sectors such as the export processing zones, where unions face considerable employer and official hostility.
TUCP is affiliated with the International Trade Union Confederation
and its Asia Pacific organization, and the ASEAN Trade Union Council (ATUC).
