Yadav made his cricketing debut for Air India in the All-India Invitation Tournament of 2008-09, making two appearances in this two-day, 100-over competition, and the following month, two appearances for Vidarbha Cricket Association XI Buchi Babu Invitation Tournament - a two-day, 90-over competition.

Later in the season, Yadav made two appearances for Vidarbha Under-22s in the CK Nayudu trophy, and, in November 2008, made his first-class debut in the Ranji Trophy. From the tailend, Yadav scored 0 not out in the first innings in which he batted, and an unbeaten 15 in the second innings, in partnership with Mohammad Hashim - though this was not enough to save the team from a ten-wicket defeat. Yadav bowled 4-72 in the first innings of the match. He is a fast bowler with his pace operating around 145 Km/h. Debuted against Zimbabwe in ODI in June 2010. He has been selected to play for Delhi Dare Devils during 2011 IPL auction.

In October 2011, Umesh made his international ODI debut at home vs England in a 5 match ODI series. Umesh impressed with his lively pace (which was consistently above 140kph) and his ability to extract reverse swing in the latter overs. Despite being occasionally wayward in his accuracy, Umesh displayed his potential to be a future wicket taking fast bowler for India, something the nation has seldom been able to enjoy in spite of its illustrious cricketing history.

Umesh Yadav is on his way to become frontline bowler for India. In this debut test match, he took a clean bowled wicket of a West Indian batsman. The stumps flew off from the ground and left the batsmen wondering where the wicket went.

In Umesh Yadav's second test match he claimed the prize wicket of stylish player Adrian Barath with his second ball. Speed was 143.3 kmph. This was in the Kolkata test match against West Indies on November 15th, 2011.His performances are earning him quite a following. Umesh Yadav took 7 wickets in that test match, leading the Indian bowling attack. His 7 wicket haul came on a pitch, which did not assist much swing.Out of this 7, 5 wickets were clean bowled, at pace of 138+ kmph, which shows his ability to bowl with real pace.Along with VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid
