It was established as Rastorguyevo summer cottage community in 1902. Close to it is Gorki Leninskiye
, Lenin's estate in his final years. The Sukhanovka
prison was established by the NKVD
in 1938 on the grounds of the old Ekaterinskaia Pustyn' Monastery. In 1949 settlement of Vidnoye was established for workers at the newly built Moscow Coke and Gas Works factory (work on the factory started in 1937, but was interrupted during World War II
). Vidnoye was granted town status in 1965.
