Despite mixed reviews, the film took a large opening and became another big success for Vishal.
However, after Malaikottai, he failed to reproduce the success he had faced early in his career. His following, two releases, Sathyam and Thoranai, his only releases in 2008 and 2009, respectively, failed to do well at the box office. His only release in 2010 was Theeradha Vilaiyattu Pillai
, which was an average grosser at the box office.
