-AM 560 and the Portland Press-Herald. When the radio station was sold in 1984, the WGAN call letters went with them. WGAN-TV then changed its call sign to the current "WGME-TV". It remained the flagship station of Guy Gannett Communications until the company sold most of its television stations, including WGME, to the Sinclair Broadcast Group in 1998. The 493.5-meter (1,619 foot) tall transmission tower of WGME, situated in Raymond, was built in 1959. It was, according to the 1999 Guinness Book of World Records, the world's tallest architectural structure in those days. It was surpassed by KFVS-TV
's tower
in Cape Girardeau, Missouri
in 1960. However, it remained the tallest structure in Maine until the erection of WMTW's tower in 2002. This station ceased airing analog on February 17, 2009 and broadcasts digitally-only on channel 38. WGME recently updated their website to better represent their "More Local" motto. WGME.com was updated on November 10th, 2011.

agreement that expired on December 31, 2010. The agreement was extended to January 14, 2011 while the parties continued to negotiate. An agreement in principle to resolve the dispute followed shortly thereafter and was finalized in February 2011.
Channel 13's newscasts dominated the ratings in Portland for many years. However, WCSH
overtook WGME in 1989 and dominated the ratings ever since.
Starting February 5, 2007, WGME began producing a nightly 10 o'clock newscast on Fox affiliate WPFO
after establishing a news share agreement. Known on-air as News 13 on Fox, it is currently the only prime time broadcast in the market
. In 2010, due to a revenue share agreement with the Fox station, WPFO, the station expanded the weeknight 10 o'clock broadcast to an hour and launched a two-hour long morning show on WPFO called Good Day Maine. WPFO pays WGME a fee along with a share of revenue realized from the newscast.
The station has entered into a news partnership with Maine Today Media, owner of its former newspaper sisters-- Portland Press Herald, Kennebec Journal

Starting in May 2011, News 13 created a new open and anchor credit graphics that were created in-house. They feature a new open for their News 13 at 5:30PM open entitled "Now On News 13 at 5:30". Daybreak, News 13 at Noon, News 13 Live at Five, News 13 at 5:30, News 13 at 6, News 13 at Eleven, and News 13 Weekend Edition (6PM and 11PM) all feature new anchor/weather/sports credits before their first commercial during their show's specific 30 minute news block with the exception of News 13 Weekend Edition which has their credits before the show opens, then opens their show again with the normal story transition graphic (All Sinclair stations use the same graphics scheme, but WGME uses their own opens and credits, as well as in-house commercial graphics and story graphics during commercial blogs for featured stories). News 13 at 6 and News 13 at Eleven have an additional phrase during their anchor credits which state "More Local" and "The Way NEWS Should Be", and then close with the soul CBS News 13 news logo (whereas all others use the same logo with their news block's time frame under it). News 13 also has come out with a new featured story scheme for commercial blocks on their station.
News 13 has heavily promoted themselves on Facebook during 2011 more than any other local station. News 13's Daybreak has several segments every morning from 4:55AM to 7AM based on Facebook. News 13's other newscasts use Facebook as well, and it has become on of News 13's greatest assets in their run to become #1 in the ratings (but WGME is still a close second to WCSH). News 13 has also put out a new commercial stating, "Get more information from News 13, go to Facebook TODAY!" using a rotating News 13 and rotates to a full sized Facebook logo. As of right now, News 13 has 25,957 fans.
On April 15, 2011 it was reported that WGME planned to convert its newscasts to high definition
that summer. The WGME Web site stated that its newscasts would be in HD sometime this December. This would make it the second local news operation in Maine to have made the upgrade following WCSH's upgrade to HD on October 23.
