1996 International Touring Car Championship season

The 1996 International Touring Car Championship season was the 2nd FIA season of its type. It was for FIA Class 1 Touring Cars
and it was contested by Mercedes Benz, Alfa Romeo
and Opel
. It was born out of the old Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft
series that ran both a short German & International series in 1995. These were fused together in 1996 to form the International Touring Car Championship (abbreviated to ITC). The eventual champion was Manuel Reuter
driving an Opel Calibra
, and Opel
won the manufacturer's championship from rivals Mercedes Benz and Alfa Romeo
, fielding a brace of C-Classes and 155s
respectively.
All 3 Manufacturers were competitive all season, with Opel's other winning drivers including veteran Hans-Joachim Stuck who took a double in Helsinki
and 1994 champion Klaus Ludwig
who repeated the feat at Norisring
. They finished 9th & 7th in the championship respectively. Alfa Romeo
came 2nd in the standings, with Alessandro Nannini
taking a convincing 7 victories, including 4 in a row midseason, culminating with 3rd in the championship. Team-mate Nicola Larini
could manage just 2 wins late in a season blighted with retirements, resulting in a disappointing 11th in the championship. Mercedes Benz finished 3rd and last in the constructors, but were every bit as competitive as their two rivals.
Reigning champion for the DTM & ITC, Bernd Schneider racked up 4 wins on the way to second in the championship, however '95 DTM runner-up Jörg van Ommen
scored a solitary win in what was a lacklustre campaign that resulted in him finishing a lowly 13th in the standings. Their junior teammates future F1
driver Jan Magnussen
and IndyCar Series
star to-be Dario Franchitti
also scored a win each, in the first and last rounds of the series respectively. This made the Scot wind up in 4th, whilist the Dane's defection to CART
mid season meant he could only manage 10th, missing 4 mid-season races. He also succumbed to many retirements despite a plethora of impressive results.
Others who impressed but failed to win included JJ Lehto, who was impressive for Opel throughout much of the season but couldn't quite score that elusive win. Young Italian Giancarlo Fisichella
was the same, with a very impressive sophomore tin-top season combined with the odd Minardi
F1 duty resulting in a respectable 6th in an Alfa Romeo. Opel driver Uwe Alzen
completed the top 10 by finishing in 8th, but just didn't have the same pace as some of the other Opel drivers.
Looking further down the field, Stefano Modena
endured an average season with Alfa Romeo that saw him take 12th in the standings. Much was expected of fellow countryman and Alfa driver Gabriele Tarquini
, but appalling luck hampered his challenge severely despite a convincing victory at Silverstone
. Christian Danner
also suffered a poor season, finishing in 15th, although late pace suggested the possibility of better and Yannick Dalmas
and Kurt Thiim
also had torrid years, even though they were teammates to the eventual 1-2 in the championship. Thiim was replaced at the end of the season, along with Alexander Wurz
and Jason Watt
as manufacturers entered one local driver in last two events. Of these, Max Wilson
was the most impressive, finishing 2nd at Interlagos.
In the end, it was consistency that gifted Reuter the title. He scored for the first 15 rounds of the season, and only failed to do so 6 times in 26 rounds. In Comparison, Schneider failed to score 8 times and Nannini 12, despite both taking more wins (3 vs. 4 & 7).
With the fastest racing and best driver line up in a FIA series outside of F1, Bernie Ecclestone
seemed to have the perfect complement to it. However, poor media exposure and television coverage resulted in poor spectator attendance, and thus little money coming into the series. This was imbalanced by the huge cost of running a 'Class 1' touring car. This was exacerbated by two long journeys to Interlagos
, and Suzuka Circuit
, circuits located in countries where some the competing cars weren't actually sold. This meant that Alfa Romeo
and Opel
announced in September they would pull out at the end of the series, despite having committed until the end of 1997. With Mercedes Benz the only remaining manufacturer committed for 1997, the series was cancelled. It wouldn't be until 2000 we saw the championship resurrected, albeit as the DTM
which was based firmly in Germany. It seems unlikely touring cars of such might will ever take on the challenge of a world series again.
