He was released from Metalurgs together with his national team team-mate Imants Bleidelis
. Bleidelis chose to retire from football then, but Rubins signed a contract with Inter Baku from Azerbaijan. He spent two seasons there, becoming a vital starting eleven player for the club. He and his team also managed to win the championship in 2009/10 season. After this season he left the team and signed a two-year contract with another club from Azerbaijan - this time - FK Qarabağ on a free transfer.
