The Andrew College charter is the second oldest charter in the United States for giving an educational institution the right to confer degrees upon women. The college opened in 1854 as a four-year college known as Andrew Female College. It was named in honor of Bishop
James Osgood Andrew
, who was responsible for the founding of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South
. In 1856 Bishop Andrew came to Cuthbert to dedicate the school to “the service of God.”
During the period of the American Civil War
, classes were suspended for three years and the buildings and facilities were used by the government of the Confederacy as Hood Hospital. In 1866 the school reopened and included in its curriculum a course in physical training, the first such course to be required of women in the South. Then, in 1892, the existing Andrew Female College buildings burned; however, funds were raised immediately by the people of Cuthbert, and “Old Main,” the present administration building, was constructed. Warren Bush Hall, the first classroom building, was constructed in 1900 and Cuthbert Hall was constructed in 1912, thereby joining “Old Main” and Warren Bush into one unit. These facilities are currently in the midst of a multi-year renovation.
In 1917, Andrew College became a two-year college. Because it was still offering preparatory programs, it remained a member of the Southern Association of Secondary Schools. Andrew remained a college serving only women until 1956, when it became coeducational.
A period of expansion began in 1948 with the construction of the original Pitts Library.
The minimum SAT
scores are 460 math and 460 verbal, or the ACT
equivalent, and a high school GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.

SSS is a federally funded grant program through Title IV (TRIO
) of the U.S. Department of Education. Andrew College is one a few private colleges the nation to offer the programe. Typically SSS is designed for public college and university settings whear most of the programs can be found.
The AndrewServes Servant Leadership Program helps students discover their leadership abilities while making an impact in the community. Retreats, tutoring and volunteering in a community agency of each student's own choosing are just a few of the program components that further enhance students' leadership education and development.
The program includes an academic component as well. Each of the four semesters students are in the program, they take a two-semester hour leadership course. These courses use the Phi Theta Kappa
Leadership curriculum. Successful completion of the program will be recognized with a designation on the student's transcript and a certificate at graduation. AndrewServes also partners with Talent Search to provide volunteering opportunities for Andrew College students and to supply area children with enrichment and academic assistance.
Weekly Chapel services at Andrew College give students the opportunity to worship together, to share their lives in meaningful ways, and, at times, to wrestle with the short answers in life. If we don’t answer these well, it doesn’t matter how well we answer the others.
The minister of the local Cuthbert United Methodist Church
serves as the campus chaplain and is also the advisor to the religious life organizations. The chaplain is also responsible for chapel services and the chapel committee that plans chapel services.
Today Pitts Library, located in the center of the Andrew College campus, provides reading and research materials for students and faculty as well as offering wireless connectivity for the convenience. The library also offers an attractive reading room, areas for individual study and a special reference section for research work. Computer workstations are available for classroom assignments and projects.
More than 180 magazines are on the shelf for viewing. Library computers offer students’ access to the entire collection via the Endeavor system as well as access to holdings at other libraries and institutions throughout the world. Students also have access to GALILEO
(Georgia Library Learning Online
) which provides a gateway to more than 6,100 full text periodical and newspapers articles that can be used in the classroom. Microfilm holdings, DVDs and reserve materials are also available in Pitts Library. A television is available for students to view DVDs assigned in their classes. The Library also contains over 35,000 books.
A concession stand and restrooms are located between the softball and baseball fields. The fields are well-manicured and located one mile from the main campus.
Jinks Physical Education Building, home to variety of athletic functions, offers you a good, full-sized gymnasium for basketball, badminton and volleyball.

Andrew introduced intercollegiate baseball in 1984. In a typical year, Andrew plays teams from Florida and Alabama, as well as from Georgia. Tryouts are held in the spring of each year, and persons who do not make the team at that time are invited to tryout again in the fall. Andrew baseball teams have qualified for two Region XVII tournaments.
Since 2006, the baseball roster has posted a cumulative team GPA of more than 3.0, and includes five Academic All-Americans. Since 2005, Andrew College has placed 35 players at four-year institutions, including three players taken in the Major League Baseball
(MLB) draft.
Basketball

Andrew College formerly had both a Men's and woman's basketball Teams. After being cut Andrew College's Basketball program ceased operation for a number of years. Then in the fall of 2006 after many meetings with the Andrew's board of directors, the college decided to reinstate the program. This time the decision was made that only the Woman's Team would be re-introded.
Cross country

Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams enjoyed successful debut seasons in 2005. The men won the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association
Division One meet at Al Bishop Park in Marietta and finished the season by competing in the NJCAA Division Meet at RIM Rock Farm in Lawrence, Kansas.
The Berry Invitational in Rome, the LaGrange College Invitational and the GA Columbus State Cougar Invitational are all stops on the Fighting Tigers’ annual Cross Country schedule.
Fast pitch softball

Intercollegiate slow pitch softball was first offered in the fall of 1991, and converted to fast pitch in the fall of 1999. Andrew participates in Region XVII that includes two-year colleges such as Middle Georgia, South Georgia, Darton College, Reinhardt College, and Coastal Georgia Community College. In the spring of 1993 the Andrew Lady Tigers won the Georgia State Junior College Championship. Tryouts are held throughout the year.
Golf

Andrew offers intercollegiate golf for men beginning in 1997. The George Bagby Golf Course in Fort Gaines, Georgia
, serves as the home course. In 1999, 2000, and 2001 the golf team won the Region XVII Championship. Women’s Golf program was introduced in the fall of 2006.
Soccer

Andrew men’s teams have claimed titles in Region XVII in 1978, 1981, 1982, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, and state titles in 1981, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, and 1989. In 1988 Andrew competed in the National Championships and finished the season ranked fifth in the nation. In 1992 the Andrew soccer team finished the season ranked number two in the nation. Andrew fields both men’s and women’s teams.

As a two year, university-parallel, church-related college, Andrew exists to provide students “a better beginning” for their college careers. Andrew specializes in the education of freshmen and sophomores. Andrew College students enjoy the particular advantages of a small, residential campus. The student life program at Andrew College is designed to promote activities and programs supportive of the college's aims and purposes. The first two years of college are critical for academic success, thus programs that support and enhance students’ lives are very important. The student life program is designed to make those years at Andrew College special and rewarding for each student. Andrew College is committed to the idea that total education involves more than academic pursuit. The social, physical, cultural, spiritual and community living aspects of the student’s life share importance with academic development. The FOCUS Program
In addition to reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities, Andrew College has established an intensive level of academic support services designed for and limited to students with documented specific learning disabilities and/or documented Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(s). These enhanced services include a full time, professionally staffed, assistive technology computer center and academic learning lab where enrolled students are monitored and supported on a daily basis. Enrollment in The Focus Program requires a supplemental admission process and fee. Based on the individualized services of this program, there are a limited number of participants. Students must commit to participate in the Focus Program on an annual basis in order for the college to allocate sufficient resources to provide these specialized services.Andrew Serves

Library Services
Pitts Library was originally built in 1948 on the east side of the campus next to Warren Bush Hall over the years the library collection grew and a new larger library building was needed to house the ever growing collection of books and other media. Then in 1967 a new larger library was constructed and rededicated the Pitts Library. The new building is double the size of the original. Soccer is a tradition at Andrew College. The soccer teams compete with two-year and four-year colleges. Andrew men’s teams have claimed titles in Region XVII in 1978, 1981, 1982, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, and state titles in 1981, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, and 1989. In 1988 Andrew competed in the National Championships and finished the season ranked fifth in the nation. In 1992 the Andrew soccer team finished the season ranked number two in the nation. Andrew fields both men’s and women’s teams.
