Garret first found success within the industry of stand-up comedy beginning from the early 1980's. From the late 1980's Garrett decided that based upon his success within stand-up, he would begin to perform on television and in film. Throughout his early acting career Garett appeared in minor and guest roles in both television and film. His first major role came when he was cast in the role of Robert Barone on the CBS comedy series Everybody Loves Raymond
