Mrs. Lonsdale first ran for office in Squamish as an alderman
, the former title for councillors in Squamish, in a byelection in 1983. She won re-election in 1984, 1986 and 1988. She first ran for Mayor in 1990 against fellow councillor Egon Tobus, losing by only 12 votes. She ran again for mayor in the next municipal election in 1993, this time defeating Tobus with more than 60 per cent of the vote. She won re-election in 1996 against Terrill Patterson and in 1999 against incumbent councillor Meg Fellowes. In the summer of 2002 she announced her intention not to seek another term as Mayor and ran for council instead, placing fifth out of 18 candidates to win a seat on council. She ran for re-election as a councillor in 2005, placing first out of 15 candidates.
