Early history

KASN signed on the air on June 17, 1986 as an independent station, KJTM. It joined Fox

 in October 1986, but in 1988, KASN negotiated a merger with eventual sister station and then-independent KLRT that would have moved KASN's Fox network affiliation and syndicated programming to KLRT, while KASN would become an affiliate of the Home Shopping Network

. KLRT abruptly pulled out of the merger deal with KASN, notifying the station by fax of its nullification of the deal on its part. However in April 1990, Fox chose to have its affiliation moved to the higher-rated KLRT rendering KASN an independent once again; this was despite the fact that a stipulation of the agreement was that KASN would remain as a Fox affiliate if the merger fell through.

KASN's owner at the time, MMC Television Corp., filed a lawsuit against KLRT owner Little Rock Communications Associates and operator Scollard Communications, alleging civil conspiracy, misappropriation of trade secrets, interfering with business relationships, breach of contract

 and fraud.

Losing Fox, and then affiliating with UPN

The Fox affiliation would change hands three times between the two stations before settling on its current Little Rock station. KASN became a UPN

 by 1992. In 2000, Clear Channel Communications purchased KASN from Mercury Broadcasting, this was around the time the Federal Communications Commission
