in Eastern Uganda

, is located approximately 55 kilometres (34.2 mi), by road, north of Soroti

. The district is located in the Teso sub-region
, home to an estimated 2.5 million people of Iteso and Kumam
ethnicities, according to the 2002 national census. In June 2005, the western part of the district was carved out to create Amuria District

Population
The national census in 2002 estimated the population of Katakwi District at about 118,900. In 2008, the World Food Program, quoting the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), estimated the population of the district at approximately 145,300. It is calculated that the annual population growth rate in the district is 2.8%. The estimated population of Katakwi District in 2010 was approximately 153,600. Economic activities
