The FA Community Shield
, previously known as the Charity Shield, has become the traditional curtain opener to each season of the English Football League
. Started in 1908
, it has been played each year since except for breaks due to the First and Second World Wars. Until 1913, the matches were between the champions of The Football League
and the Southern Football League
, when the match was changed to become a game between professionals and amateurs players. Following the break due to World War I, the match returned in 1920 with a game between the champions of the Football League First
and Second Division
s. In 1921 it changed again to become a match between the Football League Champion and the winner of the FA Cup
