The first Garmin StreetPilot was introduced at CES
1998. It featured a 240x160 black and white screen and a database of nearby services and attractions, with on-screen routing. A revised model with 240x128 color screen, the StreetPilot ColorMap was introduced soon after, adding information on services available at highway exits. The devices used 8MB or 16MB cartridges, onto which mapping data was loaded from the user's computer, at a chosen detail level (8MB covered the Atlanta Metropolitan Area at high detail, or a greater area at highway-level detail).
The successor model was the StreetPilot III in 2002, which had a 3.85" 305x160 color screen and added voice prompts, so that drivers would no longer be required to look at the screen for instructions. It came with 32MB or 128MB (Deluxe model) data cards, on to which the user would load his required mapping, plus a base map featuring major highways.
The 2610, 2620, 2650 and 2660 models were introduced in August 2003, with 3.7" 305x160 color screens, and featured for the first time touch-sensitive screens, as well as a CompactFlash
Type II slot. The 2610 and 2650 models were supplied with maps on CD plus a 128MB CF card, while the 2620 and 2660 models had no CDs, because maps were pre-installed on the 2.2GB Microdrive
. They also added multi-stop route optimization. The 2650 and 2660 were required to be fitted to the car by a professional installer, and had a reversing light sensor, speed sensor, and angular direction sensor, to boost the system's accuracy, plus dead reckoning
capability.
The 26x0 models were replaced in July 2005 by the 27x0 series. The 27x0 models offered a 3.7" 454x240 color screen, adding text-to-speech capabilities for street names and FM traffic receiver. It featured built-in storage (no memory slot). The 2720 model was the base, while the 2730 added XM capabilities, an FM transmitter, and MP3 player.
Garmin introduced its low-end i models, starting with the 2.1" 176x220 color i3 in August 2005 and the 2.1" 176x240 monochrome i2 in October 2005. Maps were loaded from DVD to the 128MB MicroSD card. The devices had only standard routing functionality, with no special features. A version of the i3 with pre-loaded map on built-in storage was released in October 2005.
The Streetpilot 7200 and 7500 models were released in December 2005 shared the functionality of the Streetpilot 2730, but featured a large 7" 480x234 screen with ambient light sensor. The 7500 was the successor to the 2650/2660 models, with the same sensors and dead reckoning capabilities.
The Streetpilot c500 range was launched in March 2006, updating the c300 with SirfStarIII, new software and a slimmer footprint. Models were the c510, c530 and c550.
The nüvi 300/350 were replaced with the 310 and 360 models in June 2006, with the same footprint, updated software and bluetooth capabilities.
The Streetpilot 2820 model replaced the 2720/2730 in June 2006, adding bluetooth capabilities, but lacking the FM transmitter.
The nüvi 610 and 660 were launched in September 2006, with a 4.3" widescreen. Both models supported FM traffic and bluetooth, while the 660 had FM transmitter and text-to-speech capabilities.
February 2007 saw the launch of Garmin's first MSN Direct
devices, with the nüvi 680 and StreetPilot c580 otherwise identical to the nüvi 660 and SteetPilot c550 models. The c580 was the last device added to the StreetPilot line-up - all subsequent devices have borne the nüvi brand. The nüvi 370 and 670 models added multi-continent mapping to the capabilities of the 360 and 660 models.
The 3.5" 12x0 series, launched Q2 2009, shrinks the case of the 2x5 series, plus adds text-to-speech. The 1300 and 1340 models, launched at the same time, compete with the 2x5w models, also adding text-to-speech and a slimmer case. The 1100, launched in May 2010, is a stripped-down version of the 1200, without text-to-speech; compared to the 205, it lacks speed limit display.
The 465T, launched Q2 2009, is a truck-specific model (allowing routing based on truck height, width, length, weight and hazmat
restrictions) with 4.3" widescreen and text-to-speech.
The 5x0 series, launched July 2008, has a 3.5" 320x240 screen, waterproofing and walking, driving, cycling and boating modes.
The high-end 7x0 series, launched August 2007, offered 4.3" widescreen and FM transmitter. This was replaced by the outwardly identical 7x5 series, with faster routing and lane assist, in August 2008.
The 8x0 series, launched June 2008, likewise offered 4.3" widescreen and FM transmitter, but also added voice recognition, making them range-toppers at launch. The 8x5 series, launched Q1 2009, adds lane assist to the mix. Compared with the 7x5 series, and excluding the voice recognition, the 7x5 offers more features and faster hardware.
The 13x0 series, launched Q2 2009 slims down the 7x5 series and omits some functionality, such as FM transmitter and mp3 player.
The 1690, launched Q4 2009, is similar to the 1390 model, but uniquely includes in-built mobile data to connect to Garmin's nüLink local information and restores some of the features omitted from the 7x5 models. It still lacks 3d building view, FM transmitter and mp3 player, all of which were included on the 755, 765, 755 and 785 models.
The 14x0 series, launched July 2009, adds multi-point routing (also present on the 7x5 and 7x5) to the featureset of the 13x0 series; the only other difference is that it features a 5" rather than 4.3" wide screen. Some models feature DVB-T
digital TV capabilities.
The 37x0 series, launched April 2010, tops the Garmin range with a high-resolution multi-touch display, ultra-slim case, and range-specific trafficTrends and myTrends route-planning. As with other recent models, there is neither FM transmitter nor mp3 player; otherwise the range includes all the functionality of the 7x5 and 8x5 series, but lacks the nüLink of the 1690.
Special purpose nüvi models are the 5x0 series, which is designed for users who will use the GPS both in and out of their cars, the 465T, for truck drivers, and the 295w, which is akin to a smartphone, but without phone capabilities.

The 400 (Europe-only) and 450 were launched as a budget model in March 2007, removing the text-to-speech and bluetooth functionality of the 550.
The 660 was launched in April 2009 with a 4.3" 480x272 screen, bluetooth, FM traffic, MP3 player, text-to-speech and lane assist with junction view. Compared with the 550 it lacks XM support.
The 220 was launched in March 2010, a slimmer model, with text-to-speech, 3.5" screen, FM traffic support and lane assist. It lacks MP3 and bluetooth functionality.
The 665 was released in Q1 2010, adding XM support to the 660.

Quest
The Garmin Quest was released in July 2004 and featured a 2.7" 240x160 non-touch-sensitive color screen. The Quest had 128MB (256MB in Europe) of memory, 13MB reserved, for the user to load maps onto. The device was waterproof and ruggedized to make it useful outside the car. An updated Quest 2 model, with expanded storage had full maps pre-installed, and was released in September 2005. No further Quest devices were released; the nuvi 500 series in 2008 is something of a successor.Streetpilot
The C300 range of affordable GPS was introduced in March 2005, offering 3.5" 320x240 touch-sensitive color screens. The c310 and c320 models featured 128MB SD cards, while the C330 model had maps on internal storage. The C300 range was completed with the C340 model in August 2005, adding FM traffic and text-to-speech to the capabilities of the C330.The 26x0 models were replaced in July 2005 by the 27x0 series.
Nüvi and Streetpilot
Garmin introduced the nüvi range of in-car navigation products in Q4 2005 as "a GPS navigator, language translator and travel guide capability, an MP3 player, an audio book player, a currency and measurement converter, a world clock, and a digital photo organizer", "the pinnacle in integrated consumer electronics for travelers" in the shape of the nüvi 300 and 350 models. It was branded the 'Personal Travel Assistant'. Compared to the Streetpilot models, the nüvis were slimmer and featured a more sensitive SirfStarIII GPS chipset.

Nüvi Series
The nüvi 2x0 series, launched April 2007, became the entry-level Garmin car products, with a 3.5" screen, lacking the multimedia capabilities of previous nuvis, thus representing the true successor to the StreetPilot series. A wide-screen 4.3" 2x0w series followed in July 2007. These models have been replaced by the 2x5 and 2x5w range (launched March 2008), which have an identical case but updated software, faster CPU and microSD rather than SD slot. The 295w, launched in May 2010 is completely different from the rest of the 2x5 range, featuring instead smartphone-like functionality, including web browser, 3MP digital camera and wi-fi.The 3.5" 12x0 series, launched Q2 2009, shrinks the case of the 2x5 series, plus adds text-to-speech. The 1300 and 1340 models, launched at the same time, compete with the 2x5w models, also adding text-to-speech and a slimmer case. Zumo Series
The zūmo range is Garmin's motorcycle range of GPS devices. It was introduced in October 2006 with 500 (national mapping) and 550 (continental mapping) models. Initial specs were a 3.5" 320x240 colour device, with text-to-speech, FM traffic support, MP3 player and bluetooth. The 550 also has XM support. All models have UV-resistance, waterproofing, ruggedization and a simulated fuel gauge to remind riders to fill up.The 400 (Europe-only) and 450 were launched as a budget model in March 2007, removing the text-to-speech and bluetooth functionality of the 550.
