Methanetetracarboxylate
Encyclopedia
In chemistry
, methanetetracarboxylate is a tetravalent
anion with formula C5O84− or C(COO−)4. It has four carboxylate groups
attached to a central carbon
atom; so it has the same carbon backbone as neopentane
. It is an oxocarbon anion
, that is, consists only of carbon and oxygen
.
The term is also used for any salt with that anion; or for any ester
with the C(COO-)4 moiety.
The salts and esters are relatively uncommon, and their uses appear to be limited to chemical research. The sodium salt Na4C(COO)4 can be obtained by oxidation of pentaerythritol
C(CH2OH)4 with oxygen
in sodium hydroxide solution at pH 10 and about 60°C, in the presence of palladium
as a catalyst. The tetraethyl ester C(COO-C2H5
)4 is traded as a specialty chemical and has been used in organic synthesis
.
The anion can be seen as the result of removing four proton
s from methanetetracarboxylic acid, a hypothetical organic compound
with formula C5H4O8 or C(COOH)4. However this acid has not been synthesised (as of 2009), and is believed to be unstable.
Chemistry
Chemistry is the science of matter, especially its chemical reactions, but also its composition, structure and properties. Chemistry is concerned with atoms and their interactions with other atoms, and particularly with the properties of chemical bonds....
, methanetetracarboxylate is a tetravalent
Valence (chemistry)
In chemistry, valence, also known as valency or valence number, is a measure of the number of bonds formed by an atom of a given element. "Valence" can be defined as the number of valence bonds...
anion with formula C5O84− or C(COO−)4. It has four carboxylate groups
Functional group
In organic chemistry, functional groups are specific groups of atoms within molecules that are responsible for the characteristic chemical reactions of those molecules. The same functional group will undergo the same or similar chemical reaction regardless of the size of the molecule it is a part of...
attached to a central carbon
Carbon
Carbon is the chemical element with symbol C and atomic number 6. As a member of group 14 on the periodic table, it is nonmetallic and tetravalent—making four electrons available to form covalent chemical bonds...
atom; so it has the same carbon backbone as neopentane
Neopentane
Neopentane, also called dimethylpropane, is a double-branched-chain alkane with five carbon atoms. Neopentane is an extremely flammable gas at room temperature and pressure which can condense into a highly volatile liquid on a cold day, in an ice bath, or when compressed to a higher...
. It is an oxocarbon anion
Oxocarbon anion
In chemistry, an oxocarbon anion is a negative ion consisting solely of carbon and oxygen atoms, and therefore having the general formula CxOyn− for some integers x, y, and n....
, that is, consists only of carbon and oxygen
Oxygen
Oxygen is the element with atomic number 8 and represented by the symbol O. Its name derives from the Greek roots ὀξύς and -γενής , because at the time of naming, it was mistakenly thought that all acids required oxygen in their composition...

The term is also used for any salt with that anion; or for any ester
Ester
Esters are chemical compounds derived by reacting an oxoacid with a hydroxyl compound such as an alcohol or phenol. Esters are usually derived from an inorganic acid or organic acid in which at least one -OH group is replaced by an -O-alkyl group, and most commonly from carboxylic acids and...
with the C(COO-)4 moiety.
The salts and esters are relatively uncommon, and their uses appear to be limited to chemical research. The sodium salt Na4C(COO)4 can be obtained by oxidation of pentaerythritol
Pentaerythritol
Pentaerythritol is the organic compound with the formula C5H12O4. This white, crystalline polyol with the neopentane backbone is a versatile building block for the preparation of many polyfunctionalized compounds such as the explosive PETN and pentaerythritol tetraacrylate...

Palladium
Palladium is a chemical element with the chemical symbol Pd and an atomic number of 46. It is a rare and lustrous silvery-white metal discovered in 1803 by William Hyde Wollaston. He named it after the asteroid Pallas, which was itself named after the epithet of the Greek goddess Athena, acquired...

Ethyl group
In chemistry, an ethyl group is an alkyl substituent derived from ethane . It has the formula -C2H5 and is very often abbreviated -Et.Ethylation is the formation of a compound by introduction of the ethyl functional group, C2H5....
)4 is traded as a specialty chemical and has been used in organic synthesis
Organic synthesis
Organic synthesis is a special branch of chemical synthesis and is concerned with the construction of organic compounds via organic reactions. Organic molecules can often contain a higher level of complexity compared to purely inorganic compounds, so the synthesis of organic compounds has...

The anion can be seen as the result of removing four proton
Proton
The proton is a subatomic particle with the symbol or and a positive electric charge of 1 elementary charge. One or more protons are present in the nucleus of each atom, along with neutrons. The number of protons in each atom is its atomic number....
s from methanetetracarboxylic acid, a hypothetical organic compound
Organic compound
An organic compound is any member of a large class of gaseous, liquid, or solid chemical compounds whose molecules contain carbon. For historical reasons discussed below, a few types of carbon-containing compounds such as carbides, carbonates, simple oxides of carbon, and cyanides, as well as the...
