It grew rapidly in the 16th century when the overlord Mikołaj Spytek Ligęza (c. 1562–1637) commissioned a church and fortified castle. Subsequently ownership of Rzeszów passed to the Lubomirski, one of the most important noble families
in Poland at the time. Besides having a famous annual market, Rzeszów remained only another city on the trade route
