Elections for the United States Senate
will be held on November 8, 2016, with 34 of the 100 seats in the Senate
being contested in regular elections whose winners will serve six-year terms from January 3, 2017 until January 3, 2023. Additionally, special elections may be held to fill vacancies that occur during the 114th United States Congress. Currently, Democrats are expected to have 10 seats up for election, and Republicans are expected to have 24 seats up for election.

Daniel Inouye
was re-elected with 75% of the vote in 2010. He has continuously represented Hawaii in Congress since it achieved statehood in 1959 and will be 92 years old in 2016. If he serves until June 29, 2014, he will surpass Robert Byrd
as the longest serving Senator in history.
In an interview along with Senator Daniel Akaka
in April 2010, Inouye said "I have told my staff and I have told my family that when the time comes when you question my sanity or question my ability to do things physically or mentally, I don't want you to hesitate. Do everything to get me out of here because I want to make certain the people of Hawaii get the best representation possible."
At the state party convention in 2010, Inouye announced he would run for a 10th term in 2016.
