New York State regulators announced that area code 315 was initially projected to become "exhausted" during the third quarter of 2010. The New York State Public Service Commission is weighing options including: an overlay area code, or a split into two area codes. Future border splits may include a north/south arrangement that would split Oswego County and parts north to a separate area code from Syracuse, or a split of east/west that would split Oswego, Onondaga

Regulators met to discuss how best to create an additional area code in the 315 area code region, but because of economic conditions, assignable numbers will not run out in the third quarter of 2010 as predicted. The predicted year has now been extended until the first quarter of 2013.
